VNET English Professional Community – Cohort 1, Moving Forward into 2019-20

Loading Events

VNET is delighted to offer English Subject Leaders, who have been members of our English Professional Community this year, the opportunity to work together again in 2019-20.

The Programme

Six sessions will be scheduled across the academic year, starting with a launch event on Tuesday 10 September 2019.  The group would be facilitated and supported by Emma Adcock (VNET Associate).

The Purpose of the Group

During 2018 and 2019, each session focused on Quality First Teaching of English. The group shared good practice and the latest educational research. The content of these sessions was driven by the community.

The Programme

We focused on: The teaching of Reading and Spelling, teaching grammar through high-quality texts, Reading Fluency and extending the most able, Inspiring children to write and Reading for Pleasure.  Over the course of the sessions, subject leaders shared evidence from their own schools. As a result of these sessions, leaders were provided with a bank of strategies and presentations to support: the teaching of Reading, Grammar and Writing to take back and share with their colleagues in school.

What’s New for 2019-2020?

This group will continue to share best practice around the Quality First Teaching of English.  This year, sessions will ‘drill down’ into the discrete areas of English in more detail. Three of the sessions will be led by the VNET Associate, and the three other sessions will be an opportunity for subject leaders to work in small groups on an aspect of English.

These groups may be key stage specific. The theme of these group sessions will be driven by requests from the English Community. These smaller sessions will take place in members’ schools.

The sessions for 2019-20 will also include a focus on: effective subject leadership for new and experienced leaders and a strong focus on the new Ofsted Framework (September 2019) and curriculum design.  There will also be opportunities to improve outcomes, engagement and enjoyment of all aspects of English in the primary phase.
