A one-day seminar for school leaders to explore and develop strategies for effective recruitment & selection for leadership and management roles. The day is most suitable for Executive Headteachers, Headteachers, Deputy Headteachers, Chairs of Governors, Trustees, both primary and secondary, with responsibilities for recruitment and selection in their organisations.
The current context is one where there is a national recruitment and retention challenge, some would say a crisis, in educational organisations. Put simply, the number of experienced leaders leaving the profession exceeds the number coming up through the system. [NCSL 2008]. One implication of this for selection of school leaders is that we cannot rely only on ‘previous track record’ of potential leaders; we have to be adept at identifying potential for leadership.
Further, the nature of leadership is changing as the context changes. Some of the capabilities we now look for in leaders may be different from in the past. The research on emotional intelligence in leadership – including in the UK education sector – suggests we need to give more weight to emotional competence, in addition to the more familiar cognitive abilities that we attempt to measure in selection processes.
The cost of a poor selection decision is high, in terms of poor organisational performance, leadership time and financial cost. The use of specific recruitment and selection methodologies can assist us in making more reliable selection decisions, both for our organisations, and for the people applying for a management or leadership role.
It is essential to get ‘the right people on the bus’.
The purpose of the seminar is to provide participants with insights into, and practical approaches to, the application of selection methodologies for leadership and management roles. The seminar aims to develop our capacity to make effective selection decisions for leadership and management roles.
The day will be led by Jolyon Morris, a highly successful organisational consultant. He works with a range of organisations, including in the education sector, on developing selection processes for Leadership & Management roles and as an Advisor on School leader selection panels.
The day will be held on Wednesday 30 January 2019, 08.30 for 09.00 – 4.00, Lionwood Infant School, Telegraph Lane East, Norwich, NR1 4AN. Parking will be signposted to behind the school site.
